Manufacturer Description

This specific smoked tea has a distinctive flavour at times referred to as tarry, and is a specific tea from Fujian province. The Fukienese term ‘souchong’ signifies sub variety - that is a sub variety of other black teas from the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian. When Lapsang Souchong was initial exported to western European international locations and became popular on the international markets, it was no doubt because of to the unique aroma and flavour.

Legend promises that the cigarette smoking procedure was found by incident. During the Qing dynasty, an army unit passing by means of Xingcun (Star Village) camped in a tea factory filled with refreshing leaves awaiting processing. When the soldiers left and the workers could get again into the premises, they realized that to arrive at marketplace in time, it was way too late to dry the leaves in the common way. So they lit open up fires of pinewood to hasten the drying. Not only did the tea reach the marketplace in time, but also the smoked pine flavour created a sensation!

The method of creation is as follows: The leaves are initial withered about fires of pine or cypress wooden. Following pan-frying and rolling, they are presses into wood barrels and covered with cloth to ferment until finally they give off a enjoyable fragrance. The leaves are fired once again and rolled into taut strips. Then they are positioned in bamboo baskets and hung on wood racks about cigarette smoking pine fires to dry and take up the smoke flavour. When finished they are thick, shiny black strips, and produce a dark red beverage with a special aroma and taste. It is generally consumed with sugar or milk. Based on one’s palate the taste can be light and intriguing or it can be weighty and overpowering.

Lapsang Souchong is greatest explained as an acquired taste.
