Manufacturer Description
This unique smoked tea has a distinctive flavour occasionally referred to as tarry, and is a unique tea from Fujian province. The Fukienese phrase ‘souchong’ indicates sub selection - that is a sub selection of other black teas from the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian. When Lapsang Souchong was initial exported to western European nations around the world and turned renowned on the global markets, it was no question due to the distinctive aroma and flavour.
Legend statements that the cigarette smoking approach was found out by accident. In the course of the Qing dynasty, an army unit passing by means of Xingcun (Star Village) camped in a tea factory stuffed with new leaves awaiting processing. When the soldiers left and the staff could get again into the premises, they recognized that to arrive at market in time, it was as well late to dry the leaves in the common way. So they lit open up fires of pinewood to hasten the drying. Not only did the tea get to the market in time, but also the smoked pine flavour designed a sensation!
The technique of creation is as follows: The leaves are initial withered above fires of pine or cypress solid wood. Right after pan-frying and rolling, they are presses into wooden barrels and lined with cloth to ferment right up until they give off a enjoyable fragrance. The leaves are fired again and rolled into taut strips. Then they are positioned in bamboo baskets and hung on wooden racks above cigarette smoking pine fires to dry and take up the smoke flavour. When finished they are thick, glossy black strips, and produce a dim red beverage with a unique aroma and style. It is generally consumed with sugar or milk. Depending upon one’s palate the style can be mild and intriguing or it can be large and overpowering.
Lapsang Souchong is greatest described as an acquired style.
